Strike me dead, are you for real Philippines?

The impeachment trial is over. And Chief Justice Corona was taken out of office by 20 Senators. I find it sad that the reason for his ouster was because he had a defective SALN. Not because he was corrupt. Nor because he was power hungry. Nor because he abused people. There’s something sticky about that. But I am not going to go on and on about that. True, I am pro-acquittal, and I honor those three Senators for voting bravely amidst the public onslaught of media.

I salute you, Bongbong, Miriam and Joker. I hope we get to watch you over many more years. And even vote for you. That’s the least I can do.

Now the common consensus is hope. Hope for a better Philippines. For a more honest government. For better politicians with higher standards. I don’t mean to be cynical, but really? EDSA 1 toppled a dictator and put a housewife. We were the toast of the world. Nothing changed. EDSA 2 toppled a corrupt President, but he was almost re-elected 9 years later. Nothing changed. We have typhoon after typhoon, floods everywhere, but still drains are clogged and the latest downpours leave … more floods. We complain about actors and athletes who know nothing about politics in Congress, yet we vote for them overwhelmingly every time.

Will we change? Will it be the right time this time?

Maybe if CJ Corona accepts the decision, even if he doesn’t agree with it, and exits the public spotlight with grace.

Maybe if the the Prosecution panel doesn’t gloat over their win, and reaches out to the Filipino people who supported Corona for a better future.

Maybe if the 188 Congressmen, or maybe all of them, and all the Senators – as what Chiz said – actually did sign the waivers and show the Philippines they have nothing to hide. Why not include ALL politicians? Make it a requirement when they file their candidacies. Where’s Noynoy’s? He said he would sign one when he ran for President 2 years ago.

Maybe if the people elect people who really want to serve. Who KNOW what they are supposed to be doing. And who want what’s best for the country.

MAYBE. We can hope. And we can watch. And vote.
