Hubert Webb and his co-accussed were acquitted by the Supreme Court today.
This movie was one of the Kris Aquino massacre movies (wait… well, you know what I mean). And there was also the Jessica Alfaro Story with Alice Dixson.
We all grew up with Hubert Webb in jail, protesting his innocence. I never gave a second thought to it, because almost everyone in jail says they are innocent. Aside from the news that he had a cell that was air-conditioned, that he could go to malls, that he would easily go in and out of jail… you never felt sorry for him.
Now, he gets acquitted. And we see Lauro Vizconde, old, frail and smoking himself out of his misery. And as much as I want to be happy for Hubert, the pain of Lauro is just too great. Is this justice? For a country where the guilty don’t stay guilty for long, and the really guilty don’t even go to jail – my heart breaks for Lauro. What happened to him can happen to anyone.
We can only pray that justice was served today. If not – the movie phrase sums it up “They kept on screaming but there was no answer… the only way out was to die!!!” Though for Hubert, there was one more way out – a friendly Supreme Court.
God help us.
